India better team than Kiwis: Vengsarkar

New Delhi: In an exclusive interview with CNN-IBN, former chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar says he has no doubt that India will come back from New Zealand with the series in their pocket. Vengsarkar had, in fact, made his international debut in New Zealand in 1976.

Dilip Vengsarkar: It was a fantastic performance (from the Indian team). As you have seen, we won the one-day series and the first Test quite comfortably, although there were a few hiccups in the second Test. But we recovered exceptionally well. I'm sure they'll do well in the last Test match of the series.

CNN-IBN: Do you firmly believe India can win this series and are good enough to win the Test series?

Dilip Vengsarkar: India is a much better team than New Zealand. There's no question about it. If you compare them man to man, India is a much better team. I'm sure they will perform as per their potential as they have done, and I'm sure they'll win the series.

CNN-IBN: The IPL has always given the chance to the fringe players to do well for a berth in the national team. Do you think the IPL this time around could also give an opportunity to a lot of other fringe Indian players like Piyush Chawla, Badrinath and others?

Dilip Vengsarkar: I agree with you. The IPL has done wonders for all the fringe players and even some who are not even in their state teams. They got a fantastic exposure the last time. And I'm sure this edition of the IPL will give them the same sort of exposure to the fringe players and bring them into the limelight.

CNN-IBN: Do you think having 3-4 different captains in the side could probably do wonders to how a team is managed in this tournament?

Dilip Vengsarkar: Having four captains in a team would be a mockery of the game because players prefer to listen to only one man who is at the helm of affairs. I don't know how it can work. All the best to the guys who are doing it.
